Dear Ministers,

To be able to communicate in English used to be useful. Nowadays it is important . But tomorrow it will be essential!  As we all know, young children of Primary school age can absorb huge amounts of information in these formative years including learning a new language. A new language can be learnt very easily and without great hardship if they are taught by competent teachers. Just because they are Primary school children doesn’t mean that you need a limited knowledge of English to teach them. In fact it is quite the opposite! Linguistic errors or shortcomings at this age cannot be rectified in later years. Their language base must be sound and solid if they are to build on it in later years. Do you really think that a 50 hour English course, 30 of which is on-line, will be enough to train experienced Primary School teachers to teach these children proficiently? You must be joking! If this is the case I will take a 50 hour Chinese language course!! And what about cultural aspects of the language, kid’s songs and learning games? Will 55 year old teachers, at least the ones that can boot a computer and with no motivation whatsoever, be able to learn this new language including grammar and pronunciation sufficiently well in these few short hours? I doubt it. What chances do our children have for the future? Instead of preparing them for globalised future we are condemning them to mediocrity. I have been teaching English for almost 30 years now and the superficial attitude you are taking to this fundamental language is totally incomprehensible. Would it be possible to have some explanations at to what is going on? If your collaborators can read this letter, it means they had viable English teachers. If they can’t understand it, then I suggest they take a 50 hour course!

Cari Ministri,

Essere in grado di comunicare in Inglese una volta era utile. Oggigiorno è importante. Ma domani sarà fondamentale! Come tutti ben sappiamo, i bambini della Scuola Primaria sono in grado di immagazzinare una enorme quantità di informazioni in questi anni formativi, inclusa una nuova lingua. Una nuova lingua può essere imparata molto facilmente e senza grande sforzo se viene loro insegnata da maestri competenti. Solo perchè sono bambini della Scuola Primaria non significa che è sufficiente avere una conoscenza limitata della lingua per poter insegnare loro l’inglese. È infatti l’esatto opposto! Errori linguistici o lacune a questa età non possono essere colmati facilmente negli anni successivi. Le basi che si pongono devono essere ben salde e sicure! Credete veramente che 50 ore di corso di lingua inglese, 30 delle quali online, saranno sufficienti per preparare adeguatamente i docenti della Scuola Primaria all’insegnamento di una lingua straniera? State scherzando! Se questoè il caso, allora farò un corso di 50 ore di Cinese!! Per non parlare degli aspetti culturali della lingua, le canzoni e i giochi didattici. E che dire delle insegnanti con un’età che si aggira attorno ai 55 anni, ovviamente quelle in grado di accendere il computer e che senza alcuna motivazione si troveranno a dover apprendere una nuova lingua, inclusa la relativa grammatica e pronuncia in modo sufficientemente adeguato in queste poche ore?Riusciranno a farlo? Lo dubito! Che possibilità avranno i nostri figli per il futuro? Invece di prepararli a un mondo che sarà sempre più globalizzato, li stiamo condannando alla mediocrità. Sono ormai 30 anni che insegno Inglese e la superficialità da voi dimostrata a questo riguardo è completamente ingiustificata. Sarebbe possibile avere una spiegazione a quanto sta accadendo? Se i vostri collaboratori saranno in grado di leggere questa lettera, significa che hanno ricevuto un’istruzione da insegnanti qualificati. Se non la comprenderanno, allora suggerisco loro un corso di 50 ore!
